Window Sash Repairs

Sashes for windows must be regularly checked for mold, mildew and damage. You can avoid future repair costs by catching these issues early on before they become out of control.

The sash is the internal framing that can be moved vertically up or down in windows that open. This article will teach you how to do simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes are a great way to add an elegant appearance to your home. They are also durable and last for a long time if they are properly maintained. However, they may become damaged or deteriorate over time due to exposure to the elements and normal wear and wear and tear. Sash repair experts can restore windows back to their original condition and maintain their appearance much longer than replacement windows.

Weather stripping is the first issue to take care of when fixing sash windows. It is located on both the frame and the sash. If it's worn or loose, out, it can cause drafts and other problems. Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to improve the performance of your window sash, and also reduce the cost of energy. Sash weights are made of iron or lead cylindricals that are contained in a hidden cavity and are connected via a rope to the movable window sash. These weights act as counterbalances, which allows you to open and shut the window without having to use mechanical or electrical devices. The sash weights are usually disregarded or disabled by homeowners and turned into scrap when they fail. Consequently you might need to find replacements.

It's not easy to retrieve the sash-weight that fell from the cavity, so you'll need to find one that fits properly. You will also require a new piece of string, a length of sash cord, and a few sash pulleys to connect the new sash weights the sash cord.

Older windows made of wood are joined by mortise and tenon joints. Hammers and pins can be used to remove the wood pegs holding the parts together. After removing the access panel, you are able to begin working on the sash. Use a flat bar or chisel to pry the narrow partsing beads out of their grooves. It is important to be patient as they're often wedged or nailed in place. If the sash remains in place, break the mortise-and tenon joints with a screwdriver or hammer, then remove each wood peg. You should be able to move the sash around without difficulty, though it might require oiling if it seems stiff.

Determine the length of the sash chain or sash cord needed to reach the sash slot on the bottom, and the pulley at the top of the jamb. Cut the cord/chain and then attach it in the previous step. You can either use a hammer and screws or nails, however nails are less likely to cause damage.

If you haven't purchased an item that replaces the counterbalance system that was in place before, it is recommended to keep the original balancing weights in place. It's cheap to purchase them from architectural salvage stores and they'll be easy to install once you have the sash opened.
